At Embedded World, Qualcomm Technologies announced an agreement to acquire Edge Impulse, a move designed to enhance its offerings for developers and solidify its leadership in AI and IoT. eeNews Europe's Jean-Pierre Joosting is reporting that the acquisition aligns with Qualcomm’s broader IoT transformation strategy, which includes an advanced chipset roadmap, unified software architecture, a suite of services, extensive developer resources, and IoT blueprints to address diverse industry challenges.
Edge Impulse’s AI development platform, used by over 170,000 developers, enables the creation, deployment, and monitoring of AI models across various edge devices, including microcontrollers and processors with AI acceleration capabilities. The platform supports data collection, model training, deployment, and monitoring through a user-friendly, low-code interface. Applications include asset tracking, anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, and computer vision-based AI solutions.
Following the acquisition, Joosting reports, Qualcomm plans to integrate Edge Impulse’s platform with its Dragonwing processors, delivering superior on-device AI inferencing, computer vision, and graphics performance. Developers will also benefit from Qualcomm AI Hub, which enhances AI model efficiency, achieving up to a fourfold increase in inference performance while reducing model size and memory usage. Currently, Dragonwing QCS6490 and QCS5430 processors are supported, with additional industrial and embedded IoT processors planned for future integration.
By combining Edge Impulse’s AI tools with Qualcomm’s advanced AI hardware and software ecosystem, the company aims to accelerate edge AI adoption and expand the capabilities available to developers across industries.
AI Adoption in IoT
With AI adoption in IoT accelerating, enterprises increasingly rely on automated workflows, AI-driven analytics, and enhanced decision-making to improve operational efficiency. Qualcomm’s expertise in edge AI and industrial transformation positions it well to capitalize on this trend. Over the past several months, Qualcomm has expanded its IoT strategy, integrating hardware, software, and services to serve key sectors such as consumer electronics, security, healthcare, retail, energy, and enterprise applications.Edge Impulse’s AI development platform, used by over 170,000 developers, enables the creation, deployment, and monitoring of AI models across various edge devices, including microcontrollers and processors with AI acceleration capabilities.
